Conference Venue

We recommend using Munich's urban rail network, the U-Bahn. The closest U-bahn stop to the conference venue is Studentenstadt and is on the U6 line. This line also goes through the city center, the Marienplatz stop. Note that in the city center, the U6 line shares the same track as the U3 line. Be careful NOT to get on a U3 train — wait for a train of the U6 line that is going in the direction of "Garching-Forschungszentrum". After getting off the train at the Studentenstadt stop, go down the stairs, turn right, then walk all the way to the end of the passage. Go up the stairs to emerge on the other side of the street Ungererstraße. From this point you can follow the map below to walk to the Max Planck Institute.

Transportation to and from the Airport

For guests staying at the Hotel Ibis München Nord or near the Max Planck Institute, the most convenient form of transport to and from the airport is the Lufthansa Airport Bus. Departing from the airport every twenty minutes until 10:00 p.m., the bus takes approximately 25 min to reach the Schwabing North stop right in front of the hotel and next to the U6 station "Nordfriedhof".

To travel to the city center, one can either take the Lufthansa Airport Bus to Munich Central Station or board one of the S1 or S8 trains at the airport train station. Either way, the travel time from the city center to the airport is approximately 45 min.

General public transport information

The conference takes place at the Max Planck Institute for Physics which is a five minute walk away from the subway stop "Studentenstadt" on the U6 line. This stop is a 10 min ride away from the stations "Marienplatz" and "Universität", which are also on the U6 line nearer to the city centre, and a 3 min ride from the subway stop "Nordfriedhof" in front of the Hotel Ibis München Nord.

Munich has one of the most reliable public transport systems in the world. However, it can be quite daunting for someone visiting Munich for the first time. Here we give some tips for finding your way around the city.

Buses, trams and trains run according to a time table that is determined up to the minute (and they are normally on time!) You can check the times at which to take your bus, tram or train at the corresponding station, or you can plan your journey on the web site of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association.

The city of Munich is divided into 16 rings. The transport fares depend on how many rings your journey passes through and are independent of the mode of transportation. That means that if you buy a ticket from the city center (ring 1) to the Max Planck Institute (ring 3), you pay the same price regardless of whether you take a bus, tram or train. The rings are themselves divided into two groups. Rings 1–4 form the inner city (German: Innenraum), while the rings 5–16 form the outer city (Außenraum). Typically day tickets are sold that are valid for either just the inner city, just the outer city or for both together (Gesamtnetz). For example, it is possible to buy a ticket lasting all day for just the inner city, which would let you travel around anywhere in the inner city using any means of public transport until 6:00 the following morning. One-way tickets depend on the number of rings through which your journey passes. Please note that any trip between the airport and the inner city is considered as a Gesamtnetz trip. Furthermore if groups of up to five people travel together, there are group tickets available which make transportation much cheaper.

Tickets can be bought at the ticket machines, which can be found in all tube stations (using card or cash) and also on board buses and trams (only cash!). If you are not planning to move around a lot and would like to buy a ticket every time you need it, the best option might be to buy a “Single Tageskarte - Innenraum” for each day you use the public transport system. In case you are travelling with a group of up to 5 people, it is worth buying a “Partner Tageskarte - Innenraum”. They can be also bought for a 3-day period.

If you plan to use public transport to get from your accommodation to the conference venue for 4 days or more, the best option is probably to buy the IsarCardWoche 3 Ringe, which will let you travel within the first 3 rings of the city for 7 days. It is valid from Monday morning 0:00 until the following Monday morning.
