As an alternative you can use the
BOB trains
from the main train station (HBF)
to the village Tegernsee on lake Tegernsee. The trains leave on platform 33/34
from the "Starnberg Wing"
of the main train station (click here for a map).
The BOB (Bayerische Oberlandbahn) is a private train company serving some of the
Bavarian "Upper Lands". The train splits at "Schaftlach" station with one part
continuing to Lenggries, the other to Tegernsee. Each car's destination is
clearly indicated - MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THE TEGERNSEE CAR.
Here is a complete train schedule. The
trains leave at 42 minutes past the hour from the main train station.
On Sunday the first train is at 7:42 h, the last at 23:42 h (11:42 pm).
Tickets can be bought from the vending machines on the platform or
within the "Reisezentrum" (service center) in the main train station.
MAKE SURE YOU STAMP (VALIDATE) YOUR TICKET BEFORE ENTERING THE TRAIN.
If you arrive by train at HBF from somewhere else, buy your train
ticket all the way to Tegernsee. The BOB company accepts tickets issued
by other train companies.
If you arrive at the airport and use the S-Bahn trains from the airport to
the main train station, it is best to BUY AT THE AIRPORT a "Bayern ticket single".
This is a discount ticket available at the vending machines that is valid
for one day on most trains within Bavaria, all of Munich's public transit system,
and on the BOB. This ticket will take you from the airport to Munich and onwards to
Tegernsee. (17 Euros for the "single" version for one adult,
24 Euros the standard version, valid
for a group of up to 5 adults plus children, grandchildren and dogs).
Again, MAKE SURE YOU STAMP (VALIDATE) YOUR TICKET AFTER BUYING IT AT THE AIRPORT
BEFORE DESCENDING TO THE PLATFORM.
From Tegernsee to the Ringberg Castle take a taxi.
